UNPLUGGED STORIES FROM THE LAST GENERATION TO SURVIVE WITHOUT GOOGLE, SOCIAL MEDIA, CELL PHONES & NAVIGATION
WHEN ROAD TRIPS WERE DIFFERENT
Remember when a road trip meant digging through shoeboxes of cassette tapes, arguing over who got to be DJ, and praying your mixtape didn't get eaten by the car stereo? We'd pool our gas money—crumpled bills and quarters from couch cushions—and just... go somewhere.
No apps telling us where the cheapest gas was or which rest stops had the cleanest bathrooms. We discovered sketchy diners with the best pie purely by accident. We'd pull over at those weird roadside attractions just because the billboard looked ridiculous. World's Largest Ball of Twine? Totally stopping.
Getting lost wasn't a panic attack—it was an adventure. We'd unfold those massive paper maps across the dashboard, trying to figure out where that wrong turn led us while someone in the backseat insisted they knew a shortcut. Half the time we ended up in some tiny town we'd never heard of, eating gas station hot dogs and laughing about how we'd explain this to our parents.
And the silence. Miles of actual conversation or comfortable quiet, watching the world roll by without anyone documenting every moment. No checking in, no status updates—just us, the open road, and whatever trouble we could find.
Sometimes I miss that feeling of being completely unreachable, untraceable, and totally free.
We didn't just take road trips—we disappeared into them.
